Zachary Burns 2013 / Lake Union is a freshwater lake that formed in a glacial basin. It is the largest lake fully within the city limits of Seattle. The lake’s salt content has increased since the locks were built that connect it with the Puget Sound but no salt crystal structure is visible. This sample was collected from the south end of the lake near the Kenmore Air Harbor Seaplane Base. Zachary Burns 2013 / This sample was collected from water leaking through the ceiling of a University of Washington apartment from the dishwasher in the unit above. The water was yellow and had visible particulate matter. This is unsurprising given the amount of drywall insulation and other material that the water must have leached through. The Cedar Rock State Park in Iowa, USA, was built around this house to preserve it and allow the general public access to the unique house. The statue and fountain are made from marble the same as the rest of the building. Zachary Burns 2013 / Australia’s pink lake is a highly saline lake located in Western Australia. It has a surface area of 245 acres and a maximum depth of 230 feet. This lake gets its bright pink color from the Halobacteria cutriubrum that grows on the salt. Halobacterum are single celled microorganisms that live in water that is saturated or nearly saturated with salt. Zachary Burns 2013 / Arrowhead bottled water was originally from the San Bernardino Mountains. It takes its name from an arrowhead shaped rock formation. Native Americans in the area say that it was created by an arrow from heaven and points towards healing hot springs. The healing properties of these springs appear in written records dating back to the 1820. In 1863 a sanitarium was built near the springs.
